April 29th, 2011 - In an interview with The International Campaign for Human Rights, Reza Khandan, Nasrin Sotoudeh's husband stated that his wife has been repeatedly pressured into providing a video confession of acts she has never committed. Khandan said: "From the first few days after her arrest and incarceration, Mrs. Sotoudeh reported that they were pressuring her into a false confession. I think it was around January or February that her interrogators made it clear that if she refused to confess, she would not be allowed to leave prison. My wife of course responded without hesitation that she would do no such thing."
Reza Khandan described his wife's condition in prison as frail, confirming that she intends to once again resume her hunger strike. He also informed the Campaign that the security agents have made it clear to his wife that if she does not confess she will not be allowed to leave prison. It goes without saying that Sotoudeh has repeatedly refused to comply with such a request. For the past eight months, security officials have refrained from transferring Sotoudeh to the general ward at Evin.
Khandan said the following of Sotoudeh's intention to resume her hunger strike: "In my first meeting with my wife after the Persian New Year, she informed me of her intention to resume her hunger strike. Given her frail physical condition, I managed to convince her against such an act. Nasrin said however, that if her current situation continues into June she will have no recourse but to resume her hunger strike. I truly hope that this will not be the case."
Khandan reiterated that his wife has been repeatedly pressured into confessing to acts she has never committed in a video confession and said: "From the first days of her arrest and incarceration, Mrs. Sotoudeh reported that they were pressuring her into a false confession. Khandan continued: "I don't know why they made such a request of Nasrin. My wife is not one to retreat regardless of the pressures exerted on her and she would never agree to such a thing even if they kept her behind bars for a hundred years. She would not only not give such an interview, but would not even allow herself to think of such a thing. If that were the case, prior to her arrest she could have resorted to much simpler measures to avoid being arrested and ensure her freedom."
When asked about the second attempt at pressuring Sotoudeh into a false confession Khandan said: "They resumed this type of discussion on New Year. When they realized that their attempts were fruitless they told my wife to ignore what had happened, that it was not important and that they had only requested that she cooperate with them. My wife of course refused to cooperate. This type of pressure is one that many prisoners are faced with. I am sure that even an hour before her release they will once again attempt to obtain a false confession from her."
Khandan continued: "The truth is, even if they put her under physical and psychological duress and keep her behind bars for two thousand years, Nasrin would never resort to such a thing. I don't mean to imply that what my wife is doing is correct - all I know is that she is incapable of such a thing. In the future, they may very well pressure her into confessing again, but I am convinced that she will once again reject such a request. A confession only makes sense when the individual in question has committed a criminal act. They [judicial officials] however, want her to accept responsibility for an act she has not committed. That is not a confession."
When asked whether or not Sotoudeh has been harmed physically Khandan responded: "She has never said anything to me regarding such a matter. I think that not having the opportunity to see her children is the worst form of torture for her. When my wife was first arrested, one of her friends would regularly visit with us. She recounted that years ago when she was single she was once arrested and sentenced to 8 years in prison, but at the time the sentence did not phase her. A few years ago, after having two kids, when she was arrested for a mere 20 days, she felt as though she was willing to give up anything in the world in order to hold her children in her arms. My wife has been waiting for eight months for such a moment. Imagine the psychological pressure on a human being as a result of being denied such a thing. She has yet to hold her children in her arms without the presence of security agents."
Khandan concluded: In the seven or eight minute visits granted to my children they have yet to see their mother in the absence of security agents. I am not sure what to name such an act. I won't call it torture or psychological pressure. I leave it up to others to define it. A mother may even agree to physical beatings if it would grant her time with her children in a free and relaxed environment; if it would ensure that her young daughter's pockets would not be searched, the chocolate and clips in her pocket removed each time she came to see her mother. There is nothing more harrowing and horrific than such an experience for any mother."

رضا خندان با اظهار اینکه به دفعات همسرش تحت فشار برای
مصاحبه و اعتراف به کارهای که انجام نداده، بوده است به کمپین بین المللی حقوق بشر در ایران گفت: «خانم ستوده از همان روزهای اول بازداشتش به نحوی می گفت که طی فشار برای اعتراف است اما دقیقا فکر می کنم حوالی دی و بهمن ماه بود که بازجویانش خیلی روشن و شفاف به او گفته بودند تا مصاحبه نکند از اینجا بیرون نمی رود، خانم من هم خیلی روشن گفته بود که این کار را نمی کند.»
رضا خندان، همسر نسرین ستوده ، حقوقدان و فعال حقوق بشر زندانی در گفت وگو با کمپین بین المللی حقوق بشر در ایران گفت که همسرش از وضعیت نامناسبی در زندان برخوردار است و قراراست به زودی دست به اعتصاب غذا بزند. او همچنین به کمپین گفت که ماموران امنیتی به صورت شفاف به همسرش گفته اند که تا اعتراف نکند نمی تواند زندان را ترک کند. خانم ستوده بارها از انجام چنین کاری سرباز زده است. مقامات امنیتی هشت ماه است که از فرستادن خانم ستوده به بند عمومی خودداری کرده اند.
آقای خندان در خصوص خبر اعتصاب غذای مجدد نسرین ستوده به کمپین گفت: «خانم ستوده در اولین دیدار ما در سال جدید گفتند به علت وضعیت نامناسب شان قصد اعتصاب دارند که من با ایشان حرف زدم و منصرف شان کردم اما گفتند اگر وضعیت تا خرداد ادامه پیدا کند دست به اعتصاب غذای دوباره می زنند که امیدوارم واقعا این اتفاق نیفتد.»

رضا خندان ادامه داد: « اما من نمی دانم چرا آنها این حرف را زده بودند چون خانم من اساسا به هیچ سختی تن نمی دهد، صد سال هم آنجا نگهش دارند این کار را نمی کند . نه تنها تن نمی دهد بلکه اصلا روی موضوعی مثل مصاحبه فکر هم نمی کند. قبل بازداشتش می توانست خیلی کارهای ساده تری از اینها بکند که اصلا بازداشت نشود.»
رضا خندان به نوبت دوم فشار به خانم ستوده برای انجام مصاحبه هم گفت:« دوباره شب عید صحبت های در این مورد کرده بودند و وقتی دیده بودند نتیجه نمی گیرند به همسرم گفته بودند بی خیال شوید، این موضوع جدی نیست، فقط در حد همکاری است که ایشان هم جوابشان همان بوده که برای مصاحبه گفته بودند. اما معمولا این مسئله از زندانیان دور نمی شود حتی یکساعت قبل از آزادیش شاید ازش بخواهند که چنین کاری بکند.»
همسر نسرین ستوده با اشاره به اینکه مصاحبه ای که ماموران می خواهند اسمش اعتراف نیست گفت: « واقعا دو هزار سال هم نگهش دارند و تحت فشار جسمی و روحی او را قراربدهند باز هم چنین کاری نمی کند. نمی خواهم بگویم کار همسر من درست است ، فقط می گویم او روحیه این کار را ندارد. شاید در آینده هم دوباره برای مصاحبه به او فشار بیاورند اما من مطمئنم که جوابش نه خواهد بود. اعتراف زمانی معنی می دهد که فردی کار مجرمانه ای انجام داده باشد و حالا اعتراف کند اما اینها می خواهند کاری که انجام نداده گردن بگیرد و از آنها بگوید، این که اعتراف نمی شود.»
رضا خندان در خصوص اینکه آیا نسرین ستوده تحت آزار جسمی هم بوده است، گفت: « به من هیچ وقت در این مورد چیزی نگفتند. به نظرم بدترین شکنجه او ندید ن بچه هایش باشد. اوایل بازداشت همسرم یکی از دوستان همسرم به دیدنمان آمد، او می گفت سال ها پیش که مجرد بوده بازداشت می شود و حکم هشت سال زندان را می گیرد اما آن موقع عین خیالش هم نبوده اما چند سال پیش با وجود دو بچه وقتی برای ۲۰ روز بازداشت می شود حس می کرده راضی است دنیا را از او بگیرند اما بتواند یک لحظه بچه هایش را در آغوش بگیرد. الان هشت ماه است که همسر من منتظر چنین لحظه ای است، تصور کنید که چه فشار روحی است. حتی یکبار هم نشده که بدون حضور مامور بچه هایش را بغل کند.»
رضا خندان گفت: « بچه ها در ملاقات های هفت، هشت دقیقه ای یکبار هم نشده که مادرشان را بدون حضور مامور ببینند. من نمی دانم اسمش چیست، اسمش را نمی گویم شکنجه یا فشار است اسمش را دیگران بگویند. شاید مادری حاضر باشد کتک بخورد اما بتواند بچه هایش را در فضای راحت و بدون مامور ببیند، جیب هایش را نگردند و از آن شکلات وکلیپس دخترش را درنیاورند. چیز وحشتناک تری از این برای مادر وجود ندارد
