Sadegh Larijani: "Interviews with Foreign Media Outlets by Iranian Lawyers an Insult to the Judicial Community"

Translator's note: In the past 48 hours, 5 lawyers representing political prisoners have been arrested in Tehran and charged with committing crimes against the national security of the Islamic Republic while abroad. Today, Sadegh Larijani the head of Iran's Judiciary had the audacity to state that speaking to foreign media outlets is against the dignity of Iranian lawyers and an insult to the judical community at large.  To Mr. Larijani I say, I am proud of the men and women of Iran's Bar Association for having the courage to be the voice for the innocent political prisoners who are tortured and imprisoned in your notorious prisons. I am proud of them for taking on these cases and informing the world, despite the fact that it is now a crime to defend the innocent in Iran.

Sunday November 14th, 2010 - In a meeting with the board members of Iran's Bar Association, Sadegh Larijani, the head of Iran's Judiciary criticized interviews given by some lawyers to foreign media outlets, stating that it is beneath their dignity.

ILNA reports Sadegh Larijani as stating: "Some of the declarations of Iranian lawyers regarding our judicial procedures and in particular their interviews with foreign media outlets are an insult to the judicial and legal community at large." Larijani added: " Being a lawyer and representing people in a court of law is an honorable vocation. I am hopeful that the dignity of this profession will be maintained by those who practice it."

It is worth mentioning that Sadegh Larijani, unfortunately did not clarify which media outlets lawyers are allowed to approach regarding the status of their defendant's trials, the manner in which they have been tried and the trampling of their rights in the face of the widespread brutalities that are taking place in Iran's judicial system today.

It goes without saying that Sadegh Larijani also neglected to mention that a lawyer's honor lies in their ability to defend their client and expose and prevent the injustices they may be facing; for silence in the face of such injustice would only lay the foundation for the continuation and expansion of further extortion and oppression within the judicial system.
