"We Salute and Honor Your Dignity" - Memories Of Evin's Ward 350 - By Saeed Pourheydar

June 21st, 2011 - In two hours, though lunch will be laid out in one of the rooms at Evin's ward 350, 12 men will refuse to eat. It is now the fourth day of their hunger strike. They have had nothing but water, sugar cubes and some salt.

They are undoubtedly hungry, very hungry.  In a few more days they will not have the strength to even stand and walk out to the open air courtyard for the obligatory, twice daily headcount by prison guards.  If only like the piercing cold winter days, the headcount would take place inside the rooms, so that these brave men would be forced to use less energy partaking in a process that is not only futile but also humiliating.

The suffering of these twelve men is not only related to their hunger. They are engulfed with sorrow at the loss of a cellmate. You can never fully understand the anguish of losing a cellmate unless you have experienced it first hand; particularly the loss of cellmate such as Hoda Saber. I lost five of my loving cellmates in less than six months. Hoda Saber was one of my cellmates during my time at Evin. I fully understand and feel the pain of my companions in prison as a result of losing him.  Losing my brother who was only a year younger than I am, was not as agonizing and heartbreaking as the loss of my five beloved cellmates.

These twelve men are suffering from much more than hunger, for their hunger will seem insignificant each time they enter the courtyard and realize that Hoda Saber is no longer amongst them- the courtyard that witnessed his one hour daily exercise routine, now quiet and bare. It will be unbearable for them to walk into the corridors at night only to realize that Hoda is no longer busy with his nightly ritual of strolling up and down the corridor.  Sundays and Tuesdays will only bring more anguish and pain, when Hoda will no longer be sitting on that bench in the courtyard giving history lessons to the other prisoners, eager to hear his every word.  For the men in Evin's Ward 350, Hoda Saber's presence will be greatly missed, for there will never be another Hoda Saber.

I pray to God that these twelve great men do not end up in the prison infirmary, for it will only add to their suffering and anguish - particularly if they are taken to the infirmary at night and have the pleasure of meeting "Azemat" [a male nurse], for Azemat does not like to be awoken at night. Azemat was at the infirmary when Hoda Saber was taken there on that now infamous night. Azemat is always there. They have kept him there so that he can continue to inflict both physical and psychological pain on the innocent men of Evin's Ward 350.  He is there to harass them.  The thought of such great men, men who have put their lives at risk standing firm against oppression and tyranny, being humiliated, mistreated and beaten by someone like Azemat is too painful to bear.

I miss Bahman Ahmadi's laughter. I miss the kindnesses of Abdollah Momeni. I miss the warm voice of Mehdi Eghbal, who replaced Emadeddin Baghi when Emad was freed from prison yesterday, making sure that the historic figure 12 [prisoners of conscience on hunger strike] was not reduced to 11. I miss the way Hassan Asadi played soccer. I miss playing chess with Mohammad Reza Moghiseh.  I miss walking in the courtyard with the kind and loving Amir Khosro Dalirsani. I miss the jokes of Mohammad Davari.  I yearn to see the calm and innocent face of Emad Bahavar.  There is so much I miss....

Have you tried by the way not to consume anything but water, some sugar cubes and salt for four entire days?  These twelve men have chosen to have nothing but water, tea and a few sugar cubes and salt for weeks on end....

Forget the suffering and grief of the other prisoners, or even the fact that they have been on a hunger strike for four days and will continue for weeks on end. Try instead not to eat anything but water a few sugar cubes and salt for three days. If it's too difficult, add milk and fruit juice to your diet.  Try for at least three days to experience the pain associated with hunger and walk in the shoes of these great men, for you will never be able to feel the real anguish of these innocent men, deprived of their families and their home, unless you too have experienced Evin's Ward 350, 209 and 240...

"We salute your honor and dignity" is a common and widely used term at Evin's Ward 350.... We salute the dignity of these honorable men.
