MUST READ - Hossein Karroubi Talks About His Father's Continued Detention & The Future of the Green Movement

Wednesday April 13th, 2011 -  In an email interview with Roozonline, Hossein Karroubi, Mehdi Karroubi's son states that he has become a fugitive and although he describes the current situation as difficult and dark, reiterates that his father always believed that this approach to governance is unsustainable and the regime will sooner or later have to give in to the will of the people, for there is no opponent more formidable than the people of Iran, a nation that now more than ever, has serious doubts about the legitimacy of its own government.

It has been more than a few weeks without any news regarding Mr. and Mrs. Karroubi. Have you been provided with an update on their condition? Except for the visitations that took place under tight security, have they [the ruling government] indicated how long this situation will last? Have they defined any conditions under which the current situation might change?

The truth is that we have not been informed of any so called conditions.  My mother and father are apparently under the control of the Intelligence Ministry and defining conditions is outside the jurisdiction of the Intelligence Ministry. Of course we must not forget that the head of the Judiciary himself has claimed that dealing with the reformists and the so called "heads of the sedition" is outside the realm of his responsibility. In other words, no one, not even the head of the Judiciary is willing to accept responsibility for any incident occurring after the house arrest and if restrictions are imposed or continued, it is higher ranking officials that must therefore provide guidance, make decisions and define conditions.  The question that remains unanswered is whether discussing any so called "conditions" is of relevance when the individuals in question are under "detention" and an illegal and inhumane act has been committed. In my opinion the issue of so called conditions becomes mute when the reality is so dark and dire. As we Iranians say, "Is there any color darker than black?"

Some are of the opinion that in order to defeat the Green movement, the authorities of the Islamic Republic have resorted to eliminating all communication between Mr. Mousavi, Mr. Karroubi and the people of Iran and given the current situation they will no longer allow these gentlemen to have direct contact with the people. What is your opinion regarding this hypothesis? Will the Green movement fail as a result of these latest developments?

On the contrary, in my opinion, rendering Mr. Karroubi and Mr. Mousavi incommunicado presents both an opportunity and a threat; an opportunity for the nation of Iran and a threat to the existing regime.  Both Mr. Karroubi and Mr. Mousavi have repeatedly stated that the people of Iran have found their path. They are vibrant and dynamic, insisting upon their demands and becoming more determined with the passing of each day.  In contrast, the regime has only been able to control the country through pressure and oppression. Those in power are so incapable and helpless that they were not only fearful of what might happened at the funeral services for Mir Hossein Mousavi's late father, but they also feared allowing events such as a funeral services for a member of the parliament and a burial ceremony for a mother of one of the supporters of the Green movement.  I recall my father telling us about the glorious ceremony that was held during the time of the Shah's regime when Ayatollah Saeedi was martyred in prison.  At the time the Shah's regime did not take any action to prevent the ceremony from taking place. This demonstrates that unlike the Shah who at the time was confident of the stability of his regime, these gentlemen are not. The Green movement benefited from certain boundaries and a specific framework and set of demands as a result of the presence of Mr. Karroubi and Mr. Mousavi. However the current actions taken by the regime have led to a variety of demands and conditions within the Green movement. These demands will change and become even more varying with the passing of time.

How do you think the Green movement should proceed, given your understanding of Mr. Karroubi's viewpoints?

The people's demands are clear and the more the regime resorts to violence, the higher the demands of the people will be in response to that violence.  Knowing how to govern and dealing with such issues is an art form. In practice, I witnessed the significant change between the spirit and positions of Mr. Karroubi and Mr. Mousavi in June pf 1999 [after the presidential elections] as apposed to January and February of 2011. In other words, they remaining the companions of our people, a nation that consists of a variety of factions and individuals with differing intellectual viewpoints and at the same time sought to further the cause of the Green movement in a logical and reasonable manner. Those who now play the role of spokesperson for these two honorable men, must neither fall short, nor resort to extremes, for any weakness in communicating the situation at hand will only lead to the frustration of our people. At the same time, these friends [referring to those who are representing Mousavi and Karroubi in their absence] should take advantage of all of our country's sympathetic and well intentioned forces for this movement does not belong to any particular group or political party. It belongs to all segments of our society. Ignoring these principles will have a negative impact on the movement, while the correct understanding and handling of them will have positive impact.

How did Mr. Karroubi feel about the future of the Green movement? Was he optimistic about the future and the goals of the movement?

One day prior to his house arrest, in a video message that made it out to the Green media outlets, Mr. Karroubi spoke explicitly of the promise of victory. Even prior to recording his last video message, my father always believed that this approach to governance was unsustainable. He believed that the regime will sooner or later have to give in to the will of the people, for there is no opponent more formidable than the people of Iran, a nation that now more than ever, has serious doubts about the legitimacy of its own government.  It is not surprising that these gentlemen are engaging in concocting new stories every day in order to regain their lost legitimacy.  One day they attribute the government subsidies to Mahdi [the last Imam] and the next day they engage in vulgar behavior such as producing a CD entitled "Judgment Day is Near".  In reality these gentlemen only seek to compensate for their lack of acceptance, with the goal to rebuild their tarnished image.  In my opinion however, this type of behavior and playing with the values and religious beliefs of our people, will only result in a large setback for the ruling government.

Did Mr. Karroubi predict the current conditions prior to his house arrest? If so what was his opinion regarding the leadership of the Green movement and how it should proceed moving forward?

First and foremost these four honorable individuals are not under house arrest, as house arrest has a specific definition. These beloved individuals have been incarcerated. As for your question, Mr. Karroubi and Mr. Mousavi awaited the arrival of such a day long ago and were always ready for any type of confrontation.  From the very beginning, Mr. Karroubi believed that we have a very difficult road ahead of us. He believed that the leadership of the movement should be in the hands of individuals who are steadfast and willing to pay any price.  He believed that the leadership should be in the hands of individuals who in addition to being assertive, would make decisions that were logical and reasonable and in the best interest of the people. For if God forbid the movement would fall in the hands of individuals who were weak or opportunistic, as the Green movement could end up with the same fate as that of the Reform Movement.

In conclusion, please tell us about the condition of Mr. Karroubi's children. How are you all doing?

Unfortunately when they were unable to get a hold of me and I was able to escape, they went after my brother Ali. He was accused of ridiculous crimes such as spying for other Persian Gulf countries and after a few weeks in prison was finally released on bail.  Except for the fact that my two brothers have been banned from leaving the country, the ruling government has not created any other problems for them.  As for me, I have become a fugitive. I have to wait and see what the future holds and what God has in store for me.

Nasrin Sotoudeh's 3 Year Old Son in Anguish: "Mommy Is Never Coming Back..."

Translator's Note: How do you turn your back on an innocent 3 year old boy longing for his mother? Tell me how? How do you ignore the plight of an innocent child who has been deprived of the comfort of his mother's arms? What was her crime you ask? Why was she taken away from her family and sentenced to 11 years behind bars? Nasrin Sotoudeh dared to stand up for Human Rights. She dared to represent the voiceless in a court of law. She had the courage to stand up for hundreds of prisoners of conscience behind bars in the Islamic Republic of Iran. How can we turn our back on Nasrin Sotoudeh, her husband Reza Khandan and her two innocent, young children? It is now upon us to act as the voice for the voiceless, for if we turn our back on Soutoudeh and her 3 year old son and young daughter, we will have turned our back on humanity...

Tuesday April 12th, 2011 - In an interview with The Center to Defend Families of those Slain and Detained in Iran, Reza Khandan Nasrin Sotoudeh's husband points to the psychological pressure exerted on his family by Iran's judiciary. Khandan also describes how they have been deprived of basic rights afforded all prisoners such as visitation with his incarcerated wife and the painful circumstances of their two young children who have been brutally denied of their mother's presence at such a tender age.

The content of the interview with Khandan is as follows:

Mr. Khandan, if at all possible, can you please describe Nasrin Sotoudeh's condition and the pressure exerted upon her and your family?

I visited the prosecutor's office prior to the Persian New Year [Norooz] requesting a face to face meeting with my wife.  They asked that I provide them with a written request and I complied.  In response to my written request and in the presence of 30 - 40 individuals, they stated that they would grant us a face to face visitation which they later reneged. On Thursday March 24th, we planned to visit with Nasrin as Thursdays are visitation days, but we were told that the prison was closed [for the Norooz holidays]. The next week, on Thursday March 31st, we once again headed for Evin with the hope to visit with my wife. Many others from across the country and other provinces were also waiting to meet with their incarcerated loved ones on that day, but the prison gates were once again closed. Unfortunately when the prison gates are closed, no one is available to answer any questions. We waited for 4 or 5 hours, losing almost an entire work day and still no one showed up. To date we have had only three, ten minute phone conversations with Nasrin. I no longer attempt to contact the prosecutor's office as it is fruitless. The last time I approached the prosecutor's office, I was arrested for approximately 10 minutes under the pretext that I had raised my voice. The prosecutor does not feel obligated to answer any questions. As a result, I have stopped contacting his office and making any demands.

How are your children holding up? Do they miss their mother?

We some how manage, but it's very difficult on the kids, particularly during Norooz when people visit each others homes. While they themselves [the regime officials] were busy with the hustle and bustle of Norooz and visiting their loved ones to their heart's content, they deprived us of all visitation. We were neither allowed a minute of face to face visitation nor even a visitation from behind a cabin.

My son is unable to cope. He has lost all hope. Last night during a short telephone conversation with his mother he broke down and told her that she was never going to come back.  The reality is slowly sinking in and things are deteriorating with the passing of each day.  His mind is filled with strange notions. He is convinced that his mother is never coming back. He argues with me and insists that she is not coming back.  My daughter has her own problems. Her aunt is even more worried about her, because she has a tendency to internalize everything. She is also at a challenging age. I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do....

I think we may just go outside the prison as a family, set up a tent and remain there in protest. No one answers us. No one pays any attention to the myriad of letters we have written [to the prosecutor and the judicial authorities]. It is because of my letters that I was summoned and a case was filed against me.  In the past eight months our children have not even met with their mother for an hour.  Based on Iran's laws, it is intolerable that a child (a three year old toddler) be deprived of seeing his/her mother.  Even though we visited others during Norooz, I wish we hadn't, as the children really missed their mother.  Her absence was very apparent. What could I do? In the end I was forced to take them away from Tehran....

BREAKING NEWS - Fakhrolsadat Mohtashamipour, Mostafa Tajzadeh's Incarcerated Wife, Vows to Resume Her Hunger Strike

Sunday April 3rd, 2011 - In the past two months and in particular after the house arrest of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, a large number of political activists, human rights activists, social activists and student activists have once again been arrested.

According to reports by Tahavole Sabz, Fakhrolsadat Mohtashamipour, Mostafa Tajzadeh's husband who began writing letters to Tehran's prosecutor upon his arrest demanding that his rights and the rights of other political prisoner be met, is one of the individuals arrested during this time. One month after her arrest, Mohtashamipour remains under interrogation and behind bars.

In a recent visit with her family, Mohtashamipour reportedly described her interrogation, stating that despite the fact that she has been charged because of her own activism and the letters she wrote to the prosecutor with regards to the condition of political prisoners behind bars, most of the questions she was asked by interrogators related to her husband Tajzadeh.

Given the evidence at hand and the interrogation process, it is clear that her arrest was preplanned and designed to exert even more pressure on her husband Mostafa Tajzadeh.

According to the latest reports in media outlets also confirmed by her family, Mohtashamipour went on a hunger strike on March 21st, 2011.

Tahavole Sabz interviewed her son-in-law Seyed Ali Tabatabai, a member of the Islamic Iran Participation Front in order to discuss Mohtashamipour's deteriorating health condition as a result of her hunger strike. The content of the interview is as follows:

Mr. Tabatabai, how many times has Mrs. Mohtashamipour been allowed to meet with her family since her incarceration? When exactly did the last visit take place?

A week after her March 1st, 2011 arrest and incarceration Mrs. Mohtashamipour was allowed an initial, but brief telephone conversation with her family. On March 20th, the family was also allowed a brief visitation. The last visit took place with her daughter yesterday after she was forced to break her hunger strike.

According to media reports, Mrs. Mohtashamipour had indicated that she will begin a hunger strike if denied an opportunity to meet with her husband Mr. Tajzadeh. Can you please expand on this issue?

Mrs Mohtashamipour continues to insist even after her arrest, that her most important duty as a member of a political prisoner's family is to follow up on the status and condition of other political prisoners and that of her husband. Mr. Tajzadeh's fate has been much like other companions critical of the coup government who have been unwilling to retract their statements. After undergoing a back operation, despite the fact that doctors had described his physical condition as frail, indicating that he is also in urgent need of a second operation on his neck, Mr. Tajzadeh was nevertheless returned to prison.  Furthermore, in an illegal and highly unconventional act [by the ruling government], rather than being transferred to the general ward at Evin, Tajzadeh was transferred to the Quarantine Ward and denied of all basic rights afforded to prisoners.

During this time, even the prison doctors have announced the urgent need for an MRI and immediate medial care. Unfortunately to date, prison officials have ignored all requests by doctors and Tajzadeh's family.

Mrs. Mohtashamipour has continued to call for her husband's medical needs be addressed. She has insisted that prison officials put an end to their illegal acts and transfer her husband to the general ward and provide him with the basic rights afforded all prisoners.  Furthermore, she had indicated that if her legal requests are ignored and she is denied visitation with her husband, she would begin a hunger strike. According to her statement, she began a hunger strike on March 21st. Unfortunately after four days of hunger strike, as a result of her rapidly deteriorating health, she was administered IV fluids.

Can you please expand upon where Mrs. Mohtashamipour is being held and her interrogation process?

Until one week after her arrest, Mrs. Mohtashamipour's family had no news of her whereabouts and well being. After her brief telephone contact, we realized that she was being held in solitary confinement in Evin's IRGC Ward 2A.  In her last visit before the new year with her family Mrs. Mohtashamipour indicated that she has not accepted any of the charges against her. According to her own account, she even wrote an open letter addressed to the judicial authorities on the piece of paper on which her charges had been published.

Have the judicial authorities indicated why Mrs. Mohtashamipour has been arrested?

Mrs. Mohtashamipour was arrested during the demonstrations that took place on March 1st, 2011, protesting the house arrest of the Green leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi.  However, according to her own account, the interrogation process and previous threats, it looks as though her arrest was preplanned and as a result of her activism on behalf of the rights of political prisoners and their families and the numerous letters she wrote to the prosecutor. It has also been stated that she must finally pay a price for her letters and the media outlets belonging to the coup government have made references to her letters claiming that she intended to collude against the regime.

Did Mrs. Mohtashamipour discuss her interrogation and the manner in which she had been treated by interrogators with her family?

Yes. In her last visit with the family, Mrs. Mohtashamipour was very critical of the manner in which she had been interrogated.  She stated that even though the judicial authorities insist that she has been arrested based on her activism and in particular the content of her letters, the majority of their questions have nevertheless been regarding her husband Mr. Tajzadeh.  She specifically stated that the authorities are interrogating her with the goal  to find something to further increase the pressure on her husband.

A number of Green media outlets published reports of Mrs. Mohtashamipour being transferred to the hospital yesterday as a result of her hunger strike. Given the concern regarding her health, can you please expand on how she is doing?

As I stated early, she began her hunger strike on March 21st, 2011. After four days, as a result of her dire physical condition, she was transferred to the prison infirmary and connected to IV fluids.  Fortunately, her physical condition is improving. However, since she has indicated that she plans to resume her hunger strike as of Monday, we are very concerned for her well being.

Is it true that despite her deteriorating physical condition, prison officials continued to deny her visitation with her family?

According to Mrs. Mohtashamipour, after her physical condition deteriorated and she was transferred to the infirmary, the prison officials demanded that she break her hunger strike.  When Mrs. Mohtashamipour refused to comply with their request, they promised that she would be allowed to meet with her husband and she was taken to the visitation room. However, instead of meeting with her husband, they brought her father to the visitation room.

What was Mrs. Mohtashamipour's reaction? Does she still insist on meeting with Mr. Tajzadeh?

After being denied visitation with Tajzadeh, in her brief meeting with her daughter yesterday, Mrs. Mohtashamipour expressed grave concern for her husband's physical condition. She has indicated that if the authorities refuse to comply with her demand, she will once again resume her hunger strike on Monday April 4th, 2011.

Can you please inform us on the latest news on Mr. Tajzadeh's condition?

Unfortunately, except for the short visit with his daughter, we have no further news on Mr. Tajzadeh's condition.  He is still deprived of all telephone contact and visitation. In his last meeting with his daughter, Mr. Tajzadeh was very critical of the manner in which he had been treated. In an act of protest against the officials, he had asked his family to follow his example and not request any visitation or contact with him. Mr. Tajzadeh also told his family in protest to his treatment by the authorities, he has fasted during the entire period of his illegal incarceration and plans to continue fasting.  Despite his weak physical condition, Tajzadeh continues to stand up for his rights. In his last visit, while referring to the coup government officials as cowards, Tajzadeh announced that he refuses to take any action that would be interpreted as given in to their demands.

Is there anything else you wish to add before we end this interview?

Unfortunately, one of the underlying reasons for the actions taken against Mr. Tajzadeh and Mrs. Mohtashamipour, as is the case for many others who have been arrested, is the personal grudge that some officials hold against them. This grudge has led to these loved ones being denied even the basic rights afforded all prisoners.

Given the warnings by doctors regarding Mr. Tajzadeh's physical condition and the fact that he has decided to continue fasting and Mrs. Mohtashamipour's recent vow to resume her hunger strike despite her weak physical condition, government officials are directly responsible for the health and well being of this incarcerated husband and wife team and all other prisoners. There is no doubt that they will have to answer to our nation one day regarding their actions. As one of many families of political prisoners we ask those responsible for the regime and the Marajeh [Grand Ayatollah's and sources of emulation] to play a critical and effective role in putting an end to such injustices.

I would like to take this time to point out that despite her weak physical condition, Mrs. Mohtashamipour's was in great spirits during her visit with her daughters, insisting that her daughters exercise patient and perseverance in dealing with the challenges ahead and to continue following up on Tajzadeh's condition and that of the other political prisoners.
Mrs. Mohtashamipour presented her youngest daughter with a poem she had written for her during her incarceration; a poem written to a daughter who now spends most of her time defending her parents' rights. The content of the poem is as follows:

A lonely daughter, an empty house, an incarcerated father
A mother in solitary confinement, the house silent, a story full of sorrow,
Yet a spring full of music is on its way

Spring will once again arrive and our house will come to life,
A city full of hope, a father released, a cage finally empty
A house filled with joy
Perhaps mother will be present, sharing the joy.. with patience all will be solved

A daughter full of pride and pain
this dead and silent house will come to life tomorrow

The day of wisdom, an auspicious day will soon arrive
full of flowers and laughter... come laugh with me...
Let us laugh at all the arrests, incarcerations and injustices...

Mir Hossein Mousavi's Daughters Answer Questions About Their Grandfather's Procession, Funeral & Burial Ceremony

Thursday March 31st, 2011 - In an interview with kaleme, Mir Hossein Mousavi's daughters describe the events that occurred on the night their grandfather passed away and during his procession, funeral and burial ceremony.

Mousavi and Rahnavard's three daughters who in the 2 years since the presidential elections had kept out of the lime light, have been forced to carry the burden of informing the public regarding the condition of their mother and father since their house arrest.  In the following interview with Kaleme, Mousavi's daughters reveal new details regarding the short presence of Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard at Mir Esmail Mousavi house on the night he passed away. Mousavi's daughters also describe the events surrounding the procession and burial of their grandfather and explain how their family was once again oppressed by security forces both inside the house and during the burial ceremony at Beheshte Zahra Cemetery.

Mousavi's daughters amongst other things reveal that Mousavi and Rahnavard have had access to Iranian television for the past few days.  They described the peaceful nature of their father's face and that he spoke of patience,  perseverance and remaining strong. Mousavi's daughters also discuss Dr. Shakourirad's courage when confronting security agents who were busy taking videos of those present at their late grandfather's house, but out of fear and in order not to be recognized were wearing face masks themselves.

The following is the content of the interview given to Kaleme by Mir Hossein Mousavi and Dr. Rahnavard's daughters:

Our condolences on the loss of your grandfather. Can you please recount the events surrounding your grandfathers passing yesterday?

After hearing that our grandfather had passed away, we went to his house. Prior to bringing my father over, a number of security agents came to my grandfathers house with the goal to negotiate the security arrangement.  They claimed that they wanted to ensure that the ceremony proceed with calm. It goes without saying that a family in mourning is also not looking for political fanfare or posturing.  They suggested that we hold the funeral services at the Arg Mosque. A mosque is the house of God but as you're aware, there is a stronger presence of plain clothes agents in that area. The family did not agree however and we explained that if we hold a funeral ceremony it will have to reflective of the dignity of our father and at a location that meets our requirements.  They told our uncle Mir Mahmoud that we should hold the commemoration on Friday, the day after the burial. (in other words the commemoration on the 3rd and the 7th day of his passing). They wanted to make sure that the ceremonies all took place during the holidays, in order to avoid crowds before Sizdebedar in Tehran. The family of course rejected this offer since as customary in Iran, the first commemoration takes place three days after the burial ceremony and not the day after the burial. Our family made everything contingent upon my father being able to bid my late grandfather farewell and also demanded that Mr. Sharif Zadegan who had been in a state of limbo for quite some time be freed.

Why did they decide to bring Mr. Mousavi over to his father's house?

It looks as though after the initial meeting, when the security agents were unable to convince the family, they decided to accept our terms.  It was around this time that a few more security officers were seen in the vicinity of the house.  Afterwards, my mother and father surrounded by security agents entered the house. The small house was filled with agents who were taking videos of every person present.  They were all in the same room were Mousavi's father was lying after he had passed away.  They even removed the white cloth covering the body of Mir Esmail Mousavi and took videos and pictures of the deceased.

My sisters upon seeing their brother and our mother ran towards them.  My father reminded them to be patient. The only words he uttered were patience... patience... patience... We must remain patient and strong.  God is with us... We kept expressing our concern, but he encouraged us to remain patient... to pray for them because all difficulties finally come to an end...

Our father then sat next to his late father's lifeless body.  He held his father's head in his arms caressing and kissing his forehead while he said a short prayer.  Father didn't cry. Much like a strong mountain he was a symbol of endurance to all those around him.  He was in the room for only a short while, speaking a few words to the family. He later went upstairs while surrounded by a group of security agents and shared the recollections he had of his father's patience, strength and strong faith.  The security agents continued to film our every move.  They took several clips and pictures of our old grandfather's lifeless face. These acts were committed by individuals who themselves wore masks, dark glasses with their mouths covered.

How did these individuals treat the family?

When they first entered the house their behavior was very cruel and aggressive. They even aggressively confiscated the cell phone belonging to one of my sisters and would not return it even when they were leaving, claiming that she had been taking pictures of them.  After a while, when faced with the family's noble behavior, they calmed down and resorted to taking videos.

How was Mir Hossein Mousavi's physical and psychological condition?

He was in great spirits. He was healthy and seemed well.  Of course there were many security agents surrounding him and they did not allow us to get too close to him.

Can you tell us how Dr. Rahnavard was doing?

Our mother was also accompanied by a number of security agents. One woman never left her side the entire time she was at my late grandfather's house. There were also a lot of people in the room that we did not know.  Dr. Rahnavard behaved as she normally does. She did not loose her calm at all. My mother has always had an uncanny ability to keep calm under difficult circumstances. This time was no different.  She was very strong, calm and resistant.

Did they say anything about their current condition?

They [my parents] said that their condition has improved slightly in the past 10 days and they now have access to books and material for drawing and sketching. In the past two to three days they have also been provided with access to Iranian television.  We did not witness any discomfort or weakness in them.  They seemed much more resilient than in the past and looked physically well.

How long were they present?

They [security officials] told us that they would be present for an hour, but they took them away after half an hour.  My father repeated over and over again that his daughters must remain strong and show no weakness.

What was the atmosphere like at the funeral services? Please tell us about the events that took place today.

Today the center of the city all the way to the Bazaar was filled with security forces and individuals that were armed. The streets were packed with men dressed like Ninja Turtles! . At first in the same room that "Agha Baba" [our grandfather] had passed away the men read prayers. The women took longer as naturally they were more emotional. They [the security officials] had promised to bring our mother and father over. But our parents never showed up.  We held a private ceremony and were mourning until the time arrived to move the body.  Suddenly a rather largely built security agent jumped up and took hold of our grandfather's body. Our family members prevented him from removing the body from the house and instead carried grandfather on their own, chanting "there is none other than God". At this point the body had arrived at the entrance of the street at Darkhoongah. They had brought an ambulance to that location. A large crowd had gathered and people were waiting. Everyone was crying out "God is Great [Allah O Akbar] and chanting another slogan.  Suddenly those in the procession, particularly the family members were attacked and beaten and the security agents robbed the body out of the hands of the family members.  This while they had promised not to cause any problems for the family, our friends and the public present.  They then transferred the body to Beheshte Zahra Cemetery.

Can you please tell us about the public's presence at the ceremony?

Despite the extreme security atmosphere in our opinion a lot of people had come. They [government officials] thought that as a result of the Norooz holidays, people would not be informed and the ceremony would be void of people.

Did they arrest anyone?

During the initial altercations, security agents were pulling a girl away. When our family members intervened a number of them were also arrested.  Javad Soleymani, Mir Hossein Mousavi's son-in-law was brutally attacked and arrested. The father of martyr Ali Mousavi and Mohsen Mousavi and his brother Seyed Esmail Mousavi, and Mohsen's son Vahid Mousavi were also beaten and arrested.  All of our family members with the exception of Mohsen and Esmail and Seyed Mehdi (my father's cousin) who was severely beaten have now been released.  They also arrested quite a few people at Beheshte Zahra Cemetery, including Dr. Shokourirad and the daughter of Ayatollah Mousavi Ardebili.

Was the atmosphere at Beheshte Zahra Cemetery similar to that at the house?

At Beheshte Zahra Cemetery behind the door of the mortuary, there is a small area where the families of the deceased with security issues hold separate prayer services.  We held prayer services for martyr Seyed Ali at the same location. This time around, a large number of security agents had blocked the area with an iron fence and would not allow the family to hold prayer services for my late grandfather. They insisted that only Mir Mahmoud and Mir Abdollah, the deceased's sons could be present for the prayer ceremony. Our father of course was not even allowed to attend the ceremony from beginning to end.  Two of our uncles refused to give in, insisting that either the entire family would attend the prayer service or no one would be reciting the prayer. At this time the rest of the family members began to cry "God is great [Allah O Akbar] from behind the iron fence and the security officers agreed to allow them to attend if they stop chanting and agree to proceed in utter silence.  At around the same time they arrested a number of other people including Dr. Shakourirad. It was a strange site. Dr. Shakourirad was shouting "There is none other than God" while a large number of security agents dragged this noble man away.  As they carried him to a car, he continued to cry out "There is none other than God". The roars of "there is none other than God" by Dr. Shakourirad will not only be recorded in history, but will remain ingrained in our minds for ever.

Do you mean to say that they refused to allow the people and the family to pray alongside the body of your late grandfather?

Yes, at first they did not allow it, but when they witnessed the family's persistence, security atmosphere increased considerably and they finally allowed only the family members to pray alongside the body.  Their video cameras were zoomed on every single family member.  There were more video cameras present here than at any other time during the entire ceremony.  They then took the body and transferred it to the burial site.  They were determined to make sure that none of us approach the body and the filming and picture taking continued until the very end.  At the grave site they also arrested two women and two men. After that there was a short elegy in Turkish, a pilgrimage to Ashura and a Fajr prayer*. People were then quickly asked to leave. Our grandfather was laid to rest right next to Ali's grave. Our family members were allowed only very briefly to pay their respect at the grave site of martyr Ali.

When will the memorial services be held?

They [security officials] wanted the memorial service to take place the day after the funeral services. For the time being, Mir Hossein Mousavi's brother has decided to stay true to Iranian tradition and hold the first commemoration services three days after the burial ceremony on the afternoon of Sunday April 3rd at the Nour mosque. In the event that changes are made, the public will of course be informed.

Is there anything else you wish to add?

Mir Esmail Mousavi was a patient and faithful man. He was devoted to God. He was fully aware of his son's pain during these past two years and only prayed.  Even though he asked about Mir Hossein every day, we all said that he was on a trip. He and his wife recited the Tawassul prayer [a religious practice in which a Muslim seeks nearness to God] every day on behalf of Mir Hossein. A 103 year old man known for his ethics has left us and we will remember him for his calm and the sense of security we felt when around him; a sense of security that even Mr. Khamenei himself experienced. Our late grandfather was known for his strong faith, exemplary patience, hard work, honesty and strength. He was always sensitive to the problems of our family members. More importantly our grandparents built a home in which their children were taught to be good examples of faithful individuals with a strong sense of ethics.

We would like to also add that 45 days have passed since we were separated from our parents.  Our meeting with them, while they were still under captivity and alongside our oppressed late grandfather should have naturally had a more emotional feeling to it. A scene that could have been converted into a family drama, instead became an epic event.  We thank God for creating the commitment and belief in the hearts of parents and families that are predestined to experience suffering and pain; for it is this commitment and belief that allows them to remain strong. Last night, our father repeatedly asked us to remain strong and stand firm. God will give us the strength to succeed in this task. Our last meeting along "Agha Baba's" lifeless body, a grandfather who had been the center of spirituality in our family, with all the bitterness and pain that could have occurred, instead was converted into a scene of hope and resistance.  This shows God's grace and the answer to the prayers and support of the people of our nation.  We have always been grateful and appreciative of their kindness and will continue to be appreciative in the future.

*Fajr prayer is the first of five daily prayers recited by practicing Muslims.
