Student Activists in Iran Issue 2nd Statement Regarding Proposed 3 Day Nationwide University Strikes

Tuesday November 23rd, 2010 - Following an initial statement by a number of student activists in Iran calling for nationwide student protests to commemorate 16 Azar, December 7th, Students Day, a second statement has now been issued, providing further details for the proposed 3 day, university wide strikes. In their first statement, the students had proposed university wide protests on December 6th, 7th and 8th (15, 16 & 17th Azar).  According to reports by Jaras, the content of the 2nd statement by student activists regarding the commemoration of Students Day is as follows:

Given that our first statement calling for university wide protests in Tehran and the provinces was received so favorably by online websites, social and student networks, we a number of student activists in Tehran propose the following nationwide activities to commemorate Students Day:

1. On December 6th (15th of Azar) we ask all students to be present at the university but boycott all classes and instead gather in front of their particular faculties.  We ask students to begin planning for this day by preparing signs and photos that commemorate the Student Movement and Students Day, to be carried on campus on this day.  For those universities that contain a number of faculties that are located next to each other we ask that students at the various faculties join their protests to ensure that their voices resonate across the campus.  We also ask that statements and notifications be published and distributed to students of public universities across the country asking them to join in the nationwide university protests.  It goes without saying that students must remain vigilant and aware and prevent events and civic activities that may lead to the arbitrary presence of security forces intent on disrupting Students Day commemorations.  Ensuring that the activities for December 6th (15 Azar) are implemented with complete confidence and courage will attract a larger number of students, facilitating more coherent and coordinated efforts for following two days.

2. On December 7th, 16 Azar, Students Day, it is vital that students ensure that their voices are heard even more loudly and clearly. We therefore once again ask that students boycott all classes on this day and instead gather on campus and announce their demands in the form of publications.  Our beloved Iran is experiencing difficult and painful times. It is our human and national duty as students and members of the educated segment of our society to feel a sense of responsibility towards ourselves and the fate of our country and ensure that our beloved Iran traverses these difficult times. We are all fully aware of the fate of so many innocent freedom fighters who are incarcerated in the notorious prisons of the Islamic Republic. We have all felt the pain of the death of our classmates at the hands of government agents.  We still remember our classmates and friends behind bars and hear daily of the pressures and torture they endure in prison.  We all feel the effects of the ineffective economic policies of this government that have led to the the financial downfall of our country and touched our daily lives. We have all been witness to the enthusiasm and hope of our people and seen how the force of the gun by the authoritarians has spread despair, frustration and depression amongst our nation. We all still honor the memory of the Sohrabs, Nedas, and the Kamangars.  We are all aware that our nation's hope lies upon us students the educated segment of our society. We are fully aware that the Islamic Republic will not hesitate in its quest to arrest, kill and execute; much like vampires whose enjoyment of the taste of blood increases with the passing of each day.

Regardless of the circumstances we face, it is our national and human duty to declare our hatred towards this deplorable situation. The 16th of Azar, a day commemorating the death of 3 martyrs of freedom and justice is a great opportunity for the Student Movement to form a cohesive movement in protest of their opponents. On this day, students should demand the unconditional release of all political prisoners and call for trials against the perpetrators of these crimes against humanity. Students should emphasize the importance of independence and freedom within universities and call for the return of the compassionate and qualified professors who have either been arrested or expelled from university.  On this day, we must also remember our Green martyrs, demonstrating that their memory is alive and that the Green People's Movement is not only vibrant but also continues on its path towards freedom and democracy.  On this 16 Azar, December 7th, we ask students to therefore carry Green symbols and images and to engage in silence, peaceful demonstrations on campus.

3. On December 7th (17 Azar) we ask that students attend university, but once again boycott all classes and gather on campus to insist upon their positions, engaging in silent and peaceful demonstrations. On Students Day, 16 Azar, we should not forget our childhood school friends who are behind the prison bars of this illegitimate regime. On this day, we must demand the immediate release of our incarcerated schoolmates and their return to university.  Our beloved classmates, we are hopeful that with your support, for the first time in the history of the Student Movement our presence will be felt in a different way.

In conclusion was ask all those who have read this statement to help us disseminate this information.  We ask individuals who are active online and members of social networks to widely post and distribute this statement online.  As a result of the prevailing police atmosphere in Iran and within our communities, each individual must act as a leader and engage in the effective dissemination of information.

Signed by a group of students in Tehran's Universities (Tehran University, Alameh Tabatabai University, Elm o Sanaat University, Amir Kabir University, Sanaati Sharif University, Shahid Beheshti University, Tarbiat Moalem University in Tehran)

It is worth mentioning that with the arrival of 16 Azar, Students Day, a group of Green students residing abroad also published a statement calling upon all Iranian students to join in world wide ceremonies commemorating the Student Movement in Iran.

Fatemeh Karroubi - "Intermittent Siege of Karroubi's Residence Continues"

Wednesday November 24th, 2010 - In an interview with Roozonline Fatemeh Karroubi , Mehdi Karroubi's wife, described the arbitrary presence of security forces outside their residence as a form of "intermittent siege" of her residence.

Fatemeh Karroubi a former member of the parliament said "Sometimes even on normal days, our house is under siege by security forces who prevent individuals from entering our residence. The presence of the security forces is unfortunately not only limited to holidays and religious ceremonies."

Mrs. Karroubi added: "Contrary to the claims by security officials that the individuals who had attacked Mr. Karroubi's residence on Ghadr and Eide Fitr had been dealt with accordingly, in reality these individuals were not reprimanded or dealt with in any manner."

Saham News, an official news outlet for The National Trust Party (Etemad Meli) reported that security forces were present both last week and once again as of yesterday outside Mehdi Karroubi's residence, preventing people from entering Karroubi's residence. It is worth mentioning that this incident is a continuation of increased restrictions on Karroubi in the past several months which have included preventing friends and family members, the families of the war heroes Martyrs Baakeri and Hemmat and prominent religious figures such as Grand Ayatollah Bayat Zanjani from entering his residence.

Karroubi's Residence under Siege by Intelligence Forces

Fatemeh Karroubi, Mehdi Karroubi's wife and a member of the fifth parliament explained: "As of last week, a few nights prior to Eide Ghorban, security forces started gathering outside our residence and prevented people from entering our house for approximately four days. With the exception of our children, no one else was allowed to enter our residence. Two days later they came again.  Even though their behavior is not as aggressive as it used to be, they nevertheless won't allow anyone to come and see us."

In response to whether or not the presence of security forces is limited to holidays and religious events and as a result of their fear that Mr. Karroubi might participate in demonstrations related to these events, Mrs. Karroubi said: "No it is not the case. The security forces arrived for example a few days before Eide Ghorban and remained until a few days after. They also show up on normal days. Their presence is not limited to holidays and religious events. The only difference is that on those particular days they increase their presence."

Mrs. Karroubi added: "The other day they even prevented Mr. Tahmasebi, the head of Karroubi's office who has worked with him for years to enter our house. On that particular day, only our sons were allowed to visit us."

We asked Mrs. Karroubi if the presence of the security forces and the fact that they do not allow anyone to enter their residence is a form of "intermittent siege" of their residence.  She responds: "Yes, exactly. I believe it is a form of "on and off siege", because it is not limited to religious holidays. They even surround our residence on normal days and prevent people from visiting with Karroubi. One day they leave us alone and the next day they are here again."

When asked why Mr. Karroubi who continues to protest the results of the rigged elections last June, is being treated this way, Mrs. Karroubi  responds "What can I say? This is a question you need to pose to the gentlemen themselves and ask them what their goal is and why they behave in this manner. What is there to say when they even stop the head of Karroubi's office from entering his house?" According to Mrs. Karroubi, the individuals who are surrounding her house are members of the Intelligence Forces.

Mrs. Karroubi, editor of the banned publication "Irandokht" told Roozonline:"The presence of security forces outside our residence, the siege of our house, the intimidation and vilification against Mehdi Karroubi will have no effect on his determination to follow up on the issues that are pertinent to the citizens of our country. Mr. Karroubi's only crime is that he has stated that we must prevent rape and torture from taking place in our prisons.  Thank God they realized what was going on and finally stopped these incidents from occurring and even accepted the atrocities and crimes that took place at Kahrizak. Mr. Karroubi's crime is exactly that and we continue to stand by him. These tactics have no effect what so ever on our resolve."

Who should we complain to?

Previously in March of last year more than 50 plain clothes agents, including a number of women gathered outside Mehdi Karroubi's residence shouting out slogans against him, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Seyed Mohammad Khatami, demanding that the government deal with them accordingly.

The pictures and videos that were published on the internet of the incident at the time demonstrated that the attackers had not only defaced the walls of the building with slogans, but had splashed red paint all over the multi-storied complex. At the time Mrs. Karroubi stated that the attackers had attempted to vandalize and destroy the building.

The news outlets and websites associated with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad referred to these thugs chanting slogans outside Mr. Karroubi's residence as supporters of Ahmadinejad and Khamenei, referring to them as a "group of families of war veterans and martyrs", stating that their actions were "spontaneous" and in protest against the "heads of the sedition". However, Saham News, an official news agency for The National Trust Party (Etemad Meli) wrote a piece at the time referring to these individuals as "thugs" engaging in unacceptable behavior and ordered by the ruling government.

The worst form of attack on the residence of Mehdi Karroubi, a protesting member of the clergy, took place on the night of Ghods and after Eide Fitr when his residence was under siege by plain clothes agents for approximately 5 days, the head of his security personnel ended up being hospitalized and his residence was vandalized. At the time of the siege, Mrs Karroubi spoke to Roozonline stating that plain clothes agents and basijis using tear gas, batons and weapons had surrounded her residence and even though security forces were present, they were mere spectators and had not interfered or stopped the events from occurring.

It was after this incident that Sajedinia, Tehran's police chief stated that 100 individuals had been identified as being involved in the attacks on Mehdi Karroubi's residence and that they were awaiting court orders in order to arrest these individuals.  A number of news agencies even reported that two individuals were arrested in relation to these attacks, but Fatemeh Karroubi's response regarding this issue was as follows: "We are still waiting to see if they will act upon their claims to deal with the plain clothes agents who brutally attacked our residence. To date, we have seen no action what so ever from the security officials and the judiciary.  Once they said they would arrest 100 individuals. Another time, they said something different. Regardless, no action was taken by these gentlemen. The only thing that has happened is that our residence is once again surrounded by security forces. This time they are members of the intelligence forces and their behavior is not as aggressive as those who were here on Eide Fitr." Mrs. Karroubi added: "The events that took place outside our residence were unprecedented in the history of the Islamic Republic. We had never before witnessed this form of insults and vandalization of an individuals residence."

In response to question of whether they had followed up on these incidents with the judiciary, Mrs. Karroubi stated: "How should we follow up on these incidents? Whom should we complain to? The police and security forces were present outside our residence when these incidents took place and did absolutely nothing to prevent them from happening. Where shall we take our complaint to? Normally, when the smallest incident occurs, such as when the window of a residence is broken, the police arrive immediately and intervene. In this incident however, they were present on the scene and stood idly as spectators. Under these circumstances what can we do? The only thing we are sure of is that God is present and will render his judgment in this world and that history is the best witness of their actions."

In a previous conversation with Roozonline Mrs. Karroubi had stated: "The security forces did not react what so ever in response to the events that took place outside our residence. The thugs entered the building, used tear gas, fired bullets, shattered the water pipes, set the entrance on fire and through it all the security forces did nothing to stop them. These individuals were organized and must have taken their orders from some where. There behavior was not spontaneous and arbitrary. How is it possible that in a country thugs attack someones residence for 6 nights and no one does anything to stop them? Who had made it possible for them to behave this way? Where did they get the confidence to behave in such a manner? Who was behind their illegal actions? Even though Hossein Karroubi, Karroubi's son identified some of the individuals present and informed Deutsche Welle that some of the attackers were members of the Jamaran Basiji forces and the Neighbourhood Martyrs Base, while others wearing masks belonged to the Farmanieh Police Station, to date there has been no news on whether or not these individuals have been prosecuted."

In the past year and a half the restrictions by the ruling government on Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi have increased manifold.  Many elements within the ruling government have threatened to begin a judicial process against Mousavi Prime Minster during the sacred war and Karroubi former Head of the Parliament and to even arrest them. The latest of such threats came from Mohseni Eje'i the Speaker for the Judiciary who when responding to Mousavi's latest statement said "If these types of individuals continue with their current actions, they will be dealt with accordingly."

f.ghazi(at)roozonline.com

GET INVOLVED: Calling to Iranian Students Abroad to Commemorate 16 Azar, Iranian Students Day

Thursday November 18th, 2010 - With Students Day, December 7th (16 Azar) fast approaching, a group of Green students and student activists abroad are calling upon all Iranian students abroad to simultaneously organize gatherings in order to commemorate this important day across the globe.

The student associations are requesting that Iranian students abroad echo the voices of the oppressed students in Iran who have been silenced in their quest for justice using the international arena to organize wide spread activities to commemorate Students Day, defending and highlighting the demands of the student movement in Iran.

According to IranGreenVoice, an online news outlet, the content of the statement by a group of Iranian student associations abroad calling for ceremonies to be organized across the globe on December 7th, 2010 in support of Student Day (16 Azar) is as follows:

We welcome Students Day this year knowing fully well that the universities in Iran remain entrenched in their resistance towards tyranny and authoritarianism. Iran's student movement remains the principle axis of the conflict between the defenders of liberty and the despotic henchmen in power. Although the universities have endured numerous wounds inflicted upon them by the ruling government, nevertheless, the flame that was lit so long ago in the quest for truth and fostering wisdom and critical thinking continues to burn.

December 7th (16 Azar) symbolizes the plight of students such as Ghandchi, Shariat Razavi and Bozorgnia,  who were killed by the Shah's forces in 1953. It is a day in which various generations of the student movement come together to defend the autonomy of the universities and foster democracy, freedom, human rights and justice. The student movement, proud of its seven decades of continuous and tireless efforts to promote our nation's traditions and enlightening our lives, now finds itself facing so many restrictions. Today, students are even denied the basic right to organize and celebrate a day named after those who will be instrumental in building the future of our nation.

In recent years we have witnessed a daily increase in pressure by the government against peaceful, civil activities within the universities. Students are either arrested on baseless accusations or deprived of an education and suspended from school. The authorities fabricate scenarios as a means to distort the legitimate activities of students and falsely charge them with activities such as involvement in a soft revolution, relationships with so called seditious groups, or connections to foreign forces, depriving them of academic freedom and their fundamental civil rights.

As members of Iranian student associations abroad, it is our duty to echo the voices of the oppressed students in Iran who have been silenced in their quest for justice using the international arena to organize wide spread activities on December 7th, 2010 to commemorate Student Day, defending and highlighting the demands of the student movement in Iran.

We strongly believe that the Iranian students abroad, bear the heavy responsibility of utilizing all avenues to mobilize universities abroad and support and compliment the activities of the student movement in Iran. Improved cooperation among Iranian students and universities abroad can greatly enhance the quality and quantity of Iranian student organizations across the globe. This is essential in revitalizing the Iranian student movement outside the country - one that can become a significant cornerstone in the quest for freedom in Iran.

Let us come together in support of the student movement in Iran and transform this year's Students Day (16 Azar) into a major milestone and turning point in the efforts of Iran's students in the recent years. To this end, we propose the following focus for a global campaign in support of Students Day in Iran:

1.   The unconditional and immediate freedom with dignity of more than seventy imprisoned students.

2.   Abolishing disciplinary committees responsible for the temporary and permanent expulsion of students from their  right to education.

3.   Academic freedom and an end to human and civil rights violations within universities.

4.   An end to ideological, governmental intervention in the research and teachings as related to the field of Humanities.

5.   Defense of the autonomy of universities.

6.   An end to governmental interference in the management of universities.

7.   An end to the widespread dismissal and early retirement of independent university professors and their replacement with less qualified henchmen.

8.   Nullification of the dissolution of Iran's University of Medical Sciences.

9.   An end to government intervention in the structure and fabric of universities.

10.  An end to political, ideological, sexist and religious discrimination in the student admission process.

11.  Reflection of the views and philosophy of Iran's student movement in matters pertinent to the country.

12.  Mobilization of Iranian student associations abroad.

13.  Supporting international sanctions against state officials who have engaged in the systematic human rights abuses and violations against the Iranian people.

Details regarding the exact time and location for Student Days ceremonies in various cities will be announced at a later date. Individuals and students who wish to support this cause may do so by emailing us at 16azar.ec@gmail.com or by referring to the following websites:
