Isa Saharkhiz Admitted to Rajai Shahr Prison's Hospital

Thursday November 11th, 2010 - According to his son Mehdi Saharkhiz, Isa Saharkhiz has required hospitalization for at least a month due to internal bleeding. Today, while praying, Saharkhiz experienced a severe drop in blood pressure, fainted and was finally transferred to the hospital at Rajai Shahr prison and treated with IVs and other medicine.

According to reports by Tahavole Sabz, after minor treatment, Saharkhiz was once again returned to prison. It is worth mentioning that Saharkhiz, a well known journalist incarcerated at Rajai Shahr prison, has had permission for a month to be transferred to a hospital for treatment. The cardiologist that had last examined Saharkhiz had also concluded that due to his heart condition, Saharkhiz is unable to tolerate incarceration.

Mehdi Saharkhiz reiterated that his father continues to wait for his release so that he can pursue his complaints in the court of law, adding: "As soon as my father is released, he will not only pursue his previous complaints against Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Eje'i but will also follow up on his complaints against Ayatollah Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad."

Original report by Tahavole Sabz

***Translator's Note:  Addendum: RHANA excluded Mehdi Saharkhiz comments reported by Tahavole Sabz regarding rumors that his father was pressured to write against reformist journalists, Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi from jail. With regards to these rumors, Mehdi Saharkhiz said: "Interrogators had tried to convince my father of such a thing during his interrogation process last year. However, my father refused under any conditions to give into such demands and as a result his family has been pressured since."

Nasrin Sotoudeh Begins Drinking Water But Continues Her Hunger Strike at Evin Prison

Thursday November 11th, 2010 - According to reports by HRANA, today, Thursday November 11th, Reza Khandan, Nasrin Sotoudeh's husband, Sotoudeh's sister and her brother were granted a 10 minute meeting with her from behind a booth at Evin prison.

Khandan, Sotoudeh's husband who was finally able to meet his wife after two and a half months of incarceration told the Feminist School: "Nasrin informed us that at the request of friends and her lawyers she has decided to break her "dry" hunger strike and has begun drinking water. However, she will continue a regular hunger strike (no food) until her demands have been met."

Reza Khandan added: "After 9 days of a dry hunger strike, at the request of her lawyers, she has decided to start drinking water, but will continue her regular hunger strike."

According to the Feminist School, in this meeting Sotoudeh told her family: "So far three judicial and security officers have promised to release me, however, none have stood by their words to date. I will therefore continue a regular hunger strike, until my demands have been met."

After the brief meeting with his wife Reza Khandan said: "I didn't recognize Nasrin. Her face was so gaunt that I did not recognize my own wife.  Nasrin was a mere 57 kilos (125 lbs) when she was arrested. During her incarceration she has lost approximately 13 kilos (28 lbs).  Her face is no longer recognizable to me."  Khandan added: "Nasrin confirmed that she was connected to IVs twice during her hunger strike."

Nasrin Sotoudeh, human rights lawyer and women's rights activist was arrested on September 4th, 2010. Sotoudeh has been on a hunger strike since September 25th, 2010, 9 days of which were a dry (no food, no water) hunger strike.

Rahnavard - Sending Female Political Prisoners to the Ward for Addicts Won't Cure them of their Addiction to Freedom & Democracy

Tuesday November 9th, 2010 - In response to the recent transfer of all female political prisoners in Evin to the Methadone quarantine ward reserved for addicts, Zahra Rahnvard writer, university professor and Mir Hossein Mousavi's wife stated: "Transferring female political prisoners to the Methadone quarantine ward for addicts is a waste of time, as it will not only NOT cure their addiction to freedom and democracy, but will bring them closer to God.  You who claim to be the defenders of Islam, should follow the example of the prophet Mohammad when treating women and release all imprisoned women, unconditionally.

As per reports by Kalame, a few days ago all female political prisoners at Evin prison were transferred to the Methadone quarantine ward reserved for addicts. These prisoners have been denied access to fresh air and all telephone contact. Zahra Rahnavard's short statement regarding this recent news is as follows:

The mere understanding of and familiarity with the concept of freedom and democracy can be so sweet, glorious and intoxicating that is creates an addiction. Experiencing the taste and flavors of freedom and democracy up close, however, is one of the most glorious and noble forms of human addiction possible.  Men and women who turn to this material, are not high, they do not yawn, they do not stand in prayer, they do not shake, tremor or fall, but instead fill their brain with oxygen and phosphorus, making them acutely aware and enabling them to resolve any problem no matter how challenging it may be. They are fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead and their addiction to freedom and democracy enables them to face any challenge such as oppression, fraud, discrimination, pepper spray, beatings by batons, the mass closure of newspapers, etc.

Those of us who believe in human rights, the men and women who are addicted to and love freedom and democracy will never abandon this addiction even if incarcerated in a Methadone ward; for abandoning our addiction to freedom and democracy is tantamount to giving into a disease; any form of compromise when it comes to our ideals and aspirations would result in the worst form of disease for our nation.

The Methadone Quarantine section of the female ward at Evin symbolizes the demon that Rustam brought to its knees, as Rustam is the eternal hero of our nation. He is always alive, if not in body, Rustam continues to live in the democratic spirit of every freedom fighting Iranian.

To all the prison guards and officials of our nation I say, there is still time for those who give the orders and those who perpetrator the crimes; there is still time for you to change your ways....

Transferring female political prisoners to the Methadone quarantine ward for addicts is a waste of time, as it will not only NOT cure their addiction to freedom and democracy, but will bring them closer to God.  You who claim to be the defenders of Islam, should follow the example of the prophet Mohammad when treating women and release all imprisoned women, unconditionally, regardless of whether they are in exile, solitary confinement, whether in the Methadone quarantine ward, in Tehran, or in the provinces.

It is never too late for you to release the noble human rights lawyer Nasrin Stodeh, to release Mahdiyeh Golroo, Bahareh Hedayat, Fatemeh Rahnama, Nazanin Khosravani, Atefeh Nabavi and others.  It is never too late to do the right thing.

BREAKING NEWS - All Female Political Prisoners at Evin Transferred to "Methadone" Quarantine Ward

Sunday November 7th, 2010 - According to reports received by Kaleme, all female political prisoners at Evin prison were transferred to the female Methadone Quarantine Ward. While it had been previously reported that all telephone contact with female political prisoners had been banned, today, one of the ordinary prisoners at Evin reported that all female political prisoners were transferred to the Methadone Quarantine Ward on Wednesday night and that all contact with the outside world had been banned.

To date, prison officials have also refused to allow the female political prisoners to leave the quarantine area for fresh air or to attend cultural classes. It goes without saying that the lack of news regarding the well being of these prisoners and the fact that they were transferred to the female Methadone Quarantine Ward, reserved for prisoners who are addicts and use Methadone as treatment of narcotic withdrawal and dependence has left their families worried and distraught.  In the past 5 days, the families have had no news what so ever regarding their loved ones.

According to reports from Evin, the female political prisoners had strongly protested the decision to ban all telephone contact with the outside world. Ordinary prisoners were also supporting them in this protest. One of the ordinary female prisoners was even transferred to solitary confinement for a period of 10 days for supporting the female political prisoners in their protest.

After the prisoners began protesting the banned telephone contacts, prison officials retaliated by transferring all female political prisoners to the quarantine section reserved for prisoners who are addicts. There has been no news of these prisoners since.

The increase in pressure on female political prisoners took place after a new management team took over the female ward at Evin last week.  As a result of the new management team, Bahare Hedayat, female student activist was removed of her responsibility as head of the library at the female ward, and all telephone contact with this ward was banned.

Nasrin Sotoudeh on Dry Hunger Strike at Evin Prison -

Friday November 5th, 2010 - Human Rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh's physical condition is deteriorating as a result of a dry hunger strike (no food or water) she began at Evin prison on Sunday October 31st, 2010.

RadioFarda quotes Reza Khandan, Sotoudeh's husband as saying that in addition to not eating, his wife has stopped drinking water, protesting the denial of her rights in prison.

It has been reported that Nassrin Sotoudeh announced her dry hunger strike on November 3rd, 2010 when her family and children were visiting with her in prison.  It goes without saying that Sotoudeh's children were extremely distressed and depressed at the sight of their mother who was in poor physical condition and had lost a lot of weight.  The family reported however that despite everything, Soutoudeh herself was in good spirits.

Nasrin Sotoudeh, lawyer for a number of political prisoners in Iran, was arrested on September 4th, 2010 after being summoned to the prosecutor's office at Evin.  She had recently broken her hunger strike as a result of requests by her family and other political prisoners.  According to Sotoudeh's husband Reza Khandan, even though Tehran's prosecutor Abas Jafari Dolatabadi met with Sotoudeh on Wednesday, nothing has been done to improve her physical condition.

A Letter by Majid Dori from Exile: “The Behbahani People Have Broken My Solitude”

November 2, 2010 – Majid Dori, the imprisoned *starred student banned from continuing his education, was recently exiled from Evin to Behbahan prison, a [location] that is one thousand kilometers away from the residence of his parents. Majid will now have to complete the remaining five years of his prison sentence in Behbahan. In his latest letter, however, Majid does not speak of the thousand kilometers distance between him and his parents. Instead, he informed them that he is not alone.

Majid told his family that he no longer feels alone; that he is amongst the warm and kindhearted Behbahani’s who are happy to meet a freedom-fighting student activist and have accepted him with open arms. Though Majid Dori has traveled kilometers, he cries out loud: “I am not a stranger here, I don’t feel as though I am in exile. I salute you from behind the thick walls of Behbahan prison and say: “I too am a Behbahani. The citizens of Behbahan have accepted me with open arms.”

According to Kaleme, the complete content of Majid Dori’s letter is as follows:

The Behbahani People Have Broken My Solitude

May he who stands in the way of you and I becoming us, see his home destroyed;

In the name of freedom; the freedom which I roared and for which I was deprived of a right to eduction;

In the name of freedom; the freedom which I screamed and for which I was imprisoned;

In the name of freedom; the freedom which I uttered and for which I was sent to exile…

In the name of freedom; the freedom that once tasted, [now] makes you immune to chains, imprisonment, exile and execution;

I salute freedom! I salute the innocent blood that was shed in its pursuit;

I salute the lives we lost for the cause of freedom.

On Saturday morning, they transferred me from Evin to Behbahan prison. I have been charged with Moharebeh “enemy of God” and sentenced in Judge PirAbasi’s courtroom; a courtroom where my lawyers and I were deprived of the opportunity to present a defense.

Receiving the Moharebeh sentence evokes fear in any human being. I became a Mohareb because I refused to live like an animal. If defending the right to education, the undeniable and inalienable right of every individual is waging war against God, then I am a Mohareb. If helping political prisoners, if showing compassion and sympathy toward their families is waging war against God, then I am a Mohareb. If publishing the names of those who have been killed and arrested and obtaining legal representation for those who have been arrested without cause and taken to undisclosed locations by unknown individuals is waging war against God, then I am a Mohareb. Yes, I am a Mohareb. No matter when or where, I am proud to be a Mohareb; this war is worth fighting as it is in the pursuit of freedom.

Do you believe that if people hear that I have provided comfort to families of political prisoners, supported a lonely prisoner, and published the names of those who have been killed and arrested, then they will belittle and humiliate me? Do you truly believe that incarceration and exile can stand in the way of humanity?

Those who came to power as a result of fraud, lies and denial and have entrenched themselves through suppression and intimidation will resort to anything in order to remain in power. Those who view every humane act as evil, every critical thought as an act by a Mohareb, and every innovative idea as destructive have no choice but to use endless suppression as a tool to silence the masses.

Here is to a new dawn that will bury the darkness in the dungeons of history, ensuring that the perpetrators of these crimes are brought to justice. May God help those who must stand before the people tomorrow and be accountable for their inhumane acts. If only they would at minimum adhere to the slogans they chant to others and the laws they so often make references to; if only they would practice what they preach and what they claim to be legal.

I have now been transferred to Behbahan prison in southern Iran, a prison that lacks medical and cultural facilities. When I first arrived I never believed that I would be able to continue, to endure the conditions in a prison where prisoners co-exist regardless of their crimes. I didn’t think I could survive in a prison where there are no political prisoners, where most prisoners have committed crimes such as murder, drug trafficking and theft. I thought I would be alone and out of place…

But the warm and familiar voices of the Behbahani’s warmed the frozen blood in my veins. When the Behbahani’s came to the prison gate on visitation day and asked to see me, the thousand kilometer distance between me and my family was no longer unbearable.

I was no longer alone. I no longer feel as though I am in exile. Today from behind the thick walls of this prison I pay my respect to every single one of them and say to my parents, “Father, mother, I am not alone here. My Behbahani fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters shattered my feeling of loneliness and exile. I can now proudly cry out, I too am a Behbahani! The citizens of Behbahan have accepted me with open arms. I salute their honor and dignity!”

I look forward to the day that as a result of our efforts and suffering, you and I become us…..

Majid Dori

Mousavi & Karroubi - The Citizens of Iran are Entitled to Their Rights; They are Neither Microbes nor Dust & Trash!

Monday November 1st, 2010 - Despite attempts by security forces to prevent Mehdi Karroubi from entering Pastor and visting with Mr. Hossein Mousavi, this meeting took place yesterday at Mousavi's residence as a result of Mousavi's own initiative.  The following is a summary of the discussions that took place.

The meeting between Mir Hossein Mossavi and Mehdi Karroubi began with Karroubi expressing regret over the fact that lies and slander have been institutionalized in our country stating: "They made sure that the candidate of their choice was fraudulently elected president during the 9th presidential elections. Both the 8th parliamentary elections and 10th presidential elections were rigged, leading to an explosion of protests by the people;  protests that were dealt with in the most violent manner possible. Government owned media outlets use the treasury's wealth to spread lies and insult the opposition and the slightest response from opponents and critics is not tolerated by the pro government media outlets and newspapers. It has reached a point that not only do they not publish any news related to us, but we are also banned from publishing condolences to those who have lost loved ones. They do not tolerate any form of freedom of expression. Rather than ensuring that free and fair elections be held in our country, they decided instead to slaughter any form of freedom, truth and honesty."

While pointing to the lack of tact and wisdom in the manner in which the affairs of the country are being managed, Mousavi stated: "In general no one is opposed to targeted subsidies. The point we are making here is that the necessary work force to manage this type of subsidy program is currently nonexistent. A large segment of the expert task force and those with knowledge have been eliminated. The government should not be proud of the fact that in order to implement the targeted subsidy programs it has been reduced to creating fear by deploying police, basiji and IRGC forces to 2000 locations across Tehran. These gentlemen's management practices and methods have led to the destruction of our economy and other sectors of our society, making it exceedingly more difficult to return to the conditions that our country found itself in 6 years ago [pre Ahmadinejad]."

With the 13th of Aban [anniversary of take over of U.S. Embassy in Tehran 31 years ago] approaching, Mousavi and Karroubi noted: "On the eve of 13th of Aban, Student Day and the Anniversary of the Imam's exile we unfortunately continue to witness great pressure on our country's intellectuals, members of the academia, students, lawyers and journalists. Every day heavier sentences are issued against journalists and not only are they receiving prison sentences but they are also being banned fir decades from practicing their vocation. Well known and established lawyers are accused of defending their clients and condemned to heavy prison sentences in order to intimidate them from taking over the cases of political prisoners. Students and members of the academia are sentenced to long prison terms and exiled to prison far away from their residence, leading to distress, hardship and danger for their families.  Despite all the oppressive measures taken by the current government, new and motivated forces join the political scene with the passing of every day and with it the people's Green movement is only getting stronger."

"Creating divisions amongst the various segments in our society and calling tens of millions of individuals such as teachers, laborors, students, professors, women and men in our nation "dust & trash", "incompetent", "microbes" and "members of a sedition" is not in the best interest of our nation.  The regime that our dear Imam fought for during 15 years was after citizens obtaining sovereignty over their own destiny, rather than labeling a large segment of our population as enemies. We therefore strongly believe that it is the inherent right of every Iranian citizen to have access to civil rights and labeling them "microbes" and "dust and trash" is unacceptable and a foreign concept to say the least. A healthy society is one that that arises out of the will and vote of its people; a society in which criticism, protests and strikes are  natural and considered as basic and fundamental right of its citizens."

"The adventurous foreign policy of the current government has led to a number of resolutions being issued against our country by several international organizations. We are already witnessing the negative impact of these resolutions on the livelihood of our citizens.  There is unprecedented poverty, unemployment, closures of manufacturing facilities and indiscriminate imports to the point where even tombstones are imported from abroad. While our people suffer under these conditions, our government has provided grants and loans to foreign and neighboring countries. It is unclear to what extent the Parliament is involved and aware of these activities. Our countries economy has weakened significantly as a result of this mismanagement, but more importantly if we continue on this path of destruction, we may very well witness the demise of the regime. Is this type of mismanagement and splurging to the benefit of our nation? Why is there no transparency so that our citizens can be more aware of the affairs of their own government?"

"In conclusion, rather than waging a fruitless war against the institutions of Human Sciences in our country and demonstrating intolerance even towards your own friends, we urge you to take advantage of the knowledge and expertise of the individuals within our humanities fields; our economists, sociologists, demography specialists and individuals in other branches and empower them to resolve our countries problems with their expertise."
