BREAKING NEWS- Ali Shakouri-Rad Released from Prison on Bail

Thursday October 28th, 2010 -  Ali Shakouri-Rad, representative of the residents of Tehran in the 6th Parliament and a member of the Islamic Iran Participation Front, was released from prison on bail today, Thursday October 28th, 2010.

Shakouri-Rad was arrested on October 12th after publishing a response to Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i entitled "One Disaster after Another". In his response, Shakouri-Rad described the new contradictions and lies and stated: "After Judge Mortazavi, who was a truly a historical phenomenon in our judicial system, Mr. Mohseni Eje'i is beginning to slowly demonstrate that he too has the tendency to become a phenomena; the difference being that Judge Mortazavi had the intelligence NOT to make matters personal and as a result was able to save himself from demise, building alliances with prosecutors and remaining as part of the judiciary for 10 years. Unfortunately, Mr. Mohseni Eje'i does not possess such a reputation. It is therefore highly unlikely that he will survive much longer, particularly as Speaker."

In the past few days, a number of physicians and university professors published a letter to the head of the judiciary demanding that Shakouri-Rad a well known and hard working physician be released from prison. Last week a protest also took place at Sina Hospital where Shakouri-Rad used to practice.  During that protest, Dr. Khedmat, Shakouri-Rad's wife, quoted the Health Minister as saying that the Ministry of Health is pursuing Shakouri-Rad's release. Both Shakouri-Rad's sister and son had also published a number of memos on his behalf.  In one of the memos written to request her brother's release from prison, Shakouri-Rad's sister stated: "As I think of our loved ones today, I can't help but ask the question, what happened? How did the ruling government take over our lives, our livelihood and our reputation?"

Shakouri-Rad's son also published a letter addressing his father's interrogators stating: "I pity the interrogator who is wasting his life these days pressuring a man like my father."

An Agonizing Report from Rajai Shahr Prison For Anyone Willing to Listen

Translator's Note: I originally translated this piece on Thursday July 29th, 2010, but decided to re-post it today as a result of the absurd claims yesterday by Sohrab Soleymani the Director General of Prisons in Tehran, who claimed that prisons in Iran are much like hotels. To Mr. Soleymani I say: "Listen to the agonizing voice of Saeed Masouri from Rajai Shahr prison who writes: .... Rajai Shahr prison, a world filled with burnt, black, disheveled faces, naked bodies covered with sweat and red marks from the sting of lice. A world filled with torn trousers scraps of which are used as belts; bare and filthy feet, clothes worn inside out and covered with lice; torn, mismatched slippers. A world in which you are exposed to polluted air, the extreme smell of putrid waste, overflowing sewage from toilets, the toxicity of dry vomit, infectious phlegm and the body odor from bodies in close proximity, rarely given the opportunity to bathe; all coming to a climax with the smell of urine by those who are unable to control themselves."

Mr. Soleymani does this remind you of a hotel? What say you to the innocent families of political prisoners who live with the fact that their loved ones are being tortured behind the walls of your prisons? SHAME ON YOU! We will reveal your lies to the world! We will continue to fight for those who have been silenced and have no voice...

I ask anyone who cares about Human Rights, to read the heart breaking letter written by Saeed Masouri, describing the harrowing conditions at Rajai Shar Prison. I ask that you read his account and inform the world of the Human Rights violations and atrocities taking place behind the prison walls in Iran's notorious prisons; for remaining silent is turning our back on humanity, common decency and the dignity for life.

Thursday 29th July 2010 - RAHANA- In a moving letter, Saeed Masouri incarcerated since 2000, describes the harrowing conditions at Rajai Shahr prison. Dr. Saeed Masouri was arrested in December 2000, in the city of Dezful and is currently being held in Section 10, Ward 4 at Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj. His original trial and appeals court initially resulted in a death sentence. During his 10 years in prison he has spent 3 years in solitary confinement in prisons in Tehran and Dezful. After extensive efforts, his death sentence was reduced to life imprisonment.

According to reports by RAHANA, in the past 10 years, Masouri has never been allowed conditional leave from prison and during his initial arrest and time in solitary confinement, he endured extensive physical and psychological torture. Masouri was transferred to Rajai Shahr prison, renowned for its inhumane conditions a few years ago. In a letter written from inside prison and provided RAHANA News Agency "Human Rights House of Iran", Masouri describes the inhumane prison conditions. The content of this letter is as follows:

Life outside the prison continues as usual and it is difficult for people to imagine what hell and human tragedy is taking place a few meters behind the prison walls that they casually pass by every day; much like those who lived around the camps in Auschwitz and Dachau and perhaps had no idea what was going on inside the walls of those notorious camps.
I want to paint a picture of Rajai Shahr prison though large in the eyes of the citizens of Karaj, in reality a very small prison because of over crowding. This is a different world, much like hell depicted in fictional movies, full of fire and smoke. A world filled with burnt, black, disheveled faces, naked bodies covered with sweat and red marks from the sting of lice. A world filled with torn trousers scraps of which are used as belts; bare and filthy feet, clothes worn inside out and covered with lice; torn, mismatched slippers. A world in which you are exposed to polluted air, the extreme smell of putrid waste, overflowing sewage from toilets, the toxicity of dry vomit, infectious phlegm and the body odor from bodies in close proximity, rarely given the opportunity to bathe; all coming to a climax with the smell of urine by those who are unable to control themselves.
All this against the backdrop of the tremendous uproar and cries of prisoners who seem to spend their entire day in lines. Prisoners standing in lines holding plastic bottles that have turned black and serve as tea cups; standing in multiple, long, packed lines to use the bathroom, to take a shower, etc.
Faces gaunt with malnutrition, yet hidden behind dense beards and disheveled hair; heart breaking coughs as a result of lung problems caused by contaminated indoor air; unrecognizable bodies that are associated with starving children in Africa; masses of prisoners across the corridors, looking as though they are dead, heat stricken, with soulless eyes staring at the walls and the ceiling; naked bodies searching for lice in the seams of the clothing, bodies that touch other bodies as they pass them by, all too accustomed to the images around them.
A host of other prisoners, deprived of the ability to take a walk because of the crowds, stand alone or in twos, watching others, playing with the stitches on their wrists and neck resulting from self inflicted injuries. Many are holding a small towel or piece of cloth used every few minutes to dry the sweat that accumulates on their head and faces; a cloth that also serves as a means to mask their nose and mouth in order to better tolerate the stench of the contaminated air. Add to all this the commotion and deafening noise of their [prison guards] speakers, shouting out vulgar insults, demanding silence and giving orders to observe the bathroom and toilet rules, etc. You will only understand the severity of the conditions when you realize that a place designed to accommodate at maximum 90 people, is holding over 1100 prisoners. There is one bathroom for every 250 prisoners. There is one bar of soap or liquid soap for every 500 prisoners, one toilet (often full and over flowing) per 170 prisoners. Every 5 prisoners have access to 5 square meters of space, forcing prisoners to use the space in corridors and stairways; one blanket per every 5 - 6 prisoners; prisoners who are forced outside their prison cells from 7pm to 7am, standing in the outdoor areas because of the lack of space indoors. Even in the open air areas, you seldom find a place to stand. Food is often served to many on a piece of newspaper and the only means to eat it, is to find some place to sit in the open air areas. This condition is even obvious to the guards who not face the daunting task of counting and keeping track of the prisoners in such a large crowd, but are also exposed to all kinds of disease and illnesses.
Surprisingly, from early morning until nightfall, the television set can be heard, with talk of human dignity, human rights and the way we manage the world, but not a word is said about what is happening here behind these prison walls. Apparently, public health, bathrooms and toilets are so tied to our country's security that talking about them is considered a crime against the national security of our nation. Take for example Reza Jooshan, a 22 year old who was moved to solitary confinement because he had the audacity to speak out and complain about the conditions. Though his transfer to solitary confinement came as no surprise to me, the conditions at Rajai Shahr and other prisons are so dire that they will not be solved by sending people to solitary confinement. It is no wonder that for many prisoners incarcerated in Iran's notorious prisons, being held in a place like Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib jail is but an unattainable dream; execution becoming their only tangible hope to escape from this unbearable human tragedy.

Director General of Prisons in Tehran -The Prisons in Iran are Like Hotels, Our Prison Guards are the Best Behaved in the World!

Translator's Note: I decided to translate this article, because I am disgusted with the audacity of prison officials in Iran who blatantly lie about the torture and mistreatment of innocent prisoners in Iran's notorious prisons. To Soleymani Director General of Prisons in Tehran I say "Shame on you! How dare you make such absurd claims when Nassrin Sotoudeh's cries are being heard every night in the corridors of solitary confinement at Evin?" My heart goes out to the families of innocent political prisoners whose voices are not heard in a country where there is no respect for the law and human dignity. Read Solyemani's claims and judge for yourself....

Saturday October 23rd, 2010 - Sohrab Solyemani, Director General of Prisons in Tehran claimed that prison officials are a source of hope for prisoners in Iran, adding that many of the difficult prison conditions have been resolved. Without making references to any of the numerous complaints by prisoners regarding prison conditions Soleymani stated: "The services rendered at the prisons in Iran are at such a level that the prison atmosphere has changed from unacceptable to an environment similar to a hotel. This clearly demonstrates that mercy has been institutionalized into our prison system."

According to media reports, in ceremony bidding farewell to retiring prison officials and welcoming new recruits, while ignoring the complaints by prisoners, particularly political prisoners at Rajai Shahr and Evin prison regarding the undesirable and regrettable prison conditions, Soleymani claimed: "The behavior and actions by prison guards in Iran are currently amongst the best in the world. Even though other parts of the world may provide prison guards with advanced equipment and hardware, the lack of empathy in their prisons has resulted in prisoners being more violent and incapable of reform."

Solyemani blamed the social institutions for repeat offenses and requested that they further cooperate with the prison organizations in order to improve the effects of reform while inmates are in prison.  While ignoring the numerous reports regarding the beatings of prisoners at Rajai Shahr and Evin prison, Solyemani referred to the work by prison officials and workers as holy and claimed: "The discussion of violence and violation of prisoner rights has no relevance in our country. Pressuring prisoners and causing them physical harm is not practiced within the prisons in Iran."

Soleymani referred to the Department of Information & Security for Prisons as an example of an institution established to prevent prisoner discrimination. Soleymani made these absurd claims even though Parliament members were prevented from investigating prison conditions last year. With the exception of the investigation into Kahrizak prison, that led to its closure and was finally ordered by the Supreme Leader because it became a global scandal,  to date the numerous complaints by prisoners to the judiciary regarding other prisons has been ignored.  Soleymani also made no reference to the reasons behind banning all telephone privileges at Evin's ward 350, the lack of medical treatment for prisoners, and other restrictions that led to a group of political prisoners going on hunger strike a few months back.

Security Forces Raid the Residence of Zoya Samadi, Mansour Osanloo's Daughter-in-Law -

Friday October 22nd, 2010 - According to HRANA, on Wednesday October 20th, security forces raided the residence of Zoya Samadi, Mansour Osanloo's daughter-in-law. The security forces arrived on motor cycle and in a Peugot car at Samadi's home with the intent to serve her a court order and detain her, but were unsuccessful as she was not home. Their behavior was so aggressive that it led to the fear and distress of all neighbors.

Osanloo's daughter-in-law was initially accosted by security forces in June of 2010, when she was taken from a metro station to an undisclosed location, brutally beaten and attacked, resulting in severe physical injuries and a miscarriage.  At the time, after she was examined by a doctor and she was told to rest and avoid any type of work.  The severe injuries to her lower back and the fact that she was bedridden for a long time led to her losing her job.  Samadi's family approached the Revolutionary Court after her brutal attack, but were informed that the judicial authorities were unaware of such an attack. It is worth mentioning that prior to being attacked, Samadi had received many intimidating and insulting phone calls and had even been threatened to death.  As a result of these phone calls, the Osanloo family visited Judge Mohammadi in order to inquire whether he had given the orders for their daughter-in-law to be harassed. They were however informed that Judge Mohammadi was unaware that any phone calls had been made.

Osanloo's family made the following statement to the Revolutionary Court with regards to their daughter-in-law: "If she has committed a crime, then she should be charged, a court hearing should be held, she should be convicted and sent to prison. Why instead did you resort to brutally beating her, cause her to have a miscarriage and become bedridden? If you wish to incarcerate her then do so. Why cause such physical harm and make her incapable of working?"

The Osanloo family once again approached the judicial authorities after this last raid of Zoya Samadi's residence by security forces. It is worth mentioning that the judicial authorities denied the existence of a court order and claimed that they were unaware of such a raid.

Tuesday October 20th, 2010 - According to reports from The Committee of Human Rights Reporters (CHRR), Seyed Ali Akbar Nabavi, imprisoned student Zia Nabavi's father, was summoned by the Intelligence Ministry and interrogated for 7 hours. As per informed sources, Ali Akbar Nabavi was summoned to the Intelligence Ministry after visiting his son in Ahvaz prison. He was put under pressure and interrogated as a result of "giving an interview and following up on his son's unacceptable condition".

Ali Akbar Nabavi had previously expressed grave concern about the lack of drinking water and dire sanitary conditions at Ahvaz prison stating: "My son is being held in the worst place. The area where he sleeps is infested with cockroaches and mice."

Karroubi -Claims of an "Economic Conspiracy or Sedition" are Only Excuses to Embezzle the Nation's Wealth!

Monday October 18th, 2010 - Summary: They use the term "economic sedition" as a license for the massive repression of our people who are complaining about ever rising prices. They [the government] are fully aware of the economic disaster that awaits the nation and conveniently refers to it as an "Economic Sedition" in the making.

In reference to comments by a military commander claiming that the military atmosphere was in response to the probability that an  economic sedition or conspiracy was in the makings, Mehdi Karroubi said: "A so called economic sedition or conspiracy is only an excuse to embezzle the nation's wealth and blame others for our disastrous situation."

Karroubi added: "This gentleman's references to a supposed "economic conspiracy or sedition" is only a license for the massive repression of our people who are complaining about ever rising prices! This government is fully aware of the economic disaster that awaits the nation and as such conveniently refer to it as an "Economic Sedition" in the making.

As per Saham News, a number of journalists and reporters recently met with Karroubi, asking him questions that touched upon recent events as related to the Green movement,  the future of the Green movement, references by one of the military commanders regarding a so called economic sedition or conspiracy and comments by one of the regime's theorists that if it weren't for the Supreme Leader, the friends of the revolution would have derailed the revolution by now.

Mehdi Karroubi began the meeting by welcoming the journalists and expressing his hope and desire for the release of all imprisoned journalists. Karroubi reminded everyone that the Green movement is undoubtedly alive and continues to grow and emphasized: "Events and explosions in society occur for a reason and the factors that lead to these explosions need to be considered carefully. The events that followed the 10th presidential elections were not just related to the elections, rather, the election itself was the turning point and moment in time when the uprising took place. The Green movement was a result of a series of events that occurred before the 9th presidential elections and the 8th parliamentary elections, that surfaced after the 10th presidential elections"

While reiterating that the majority of the people are discontent, Karroubi stated: "Whether they came to the streets or not, our people are discontent. Our citizens have endured enormous pressures and hardship over the past 8 months. Security agents have raided their homes, beating mothers and children and arresting innocent citizens. If our citizens have chosen to remain silent for the time being and to endure, it does not mean that they have changed their minds.  Under such extreme circumstances,  when they even raid the house of one of the martyrs of the sacred war [reference to Bakeri family], attacking and beating their son in front of the family, or student activists are expelled from university and unfairly incarcerated, we can only conclude that the Green movement is alive and strong. This government is so fearful of the Green movement that they even ban the most simple ceremonies such as funerals and memorials.

Karroubi continued: "Our people must be decisive, determined and remain engaged in order for us to cross this difficult path. Perhaps it is even in the best interest of our people that the movement continues to develop at it's current pace, so that the stakes for the present custodians who owe so much to our people, including the reforms that were so easily achieved, become even higher.  In reference to recent statements by one of the regime's military commanders, Karroubi added: "A so called economic sedition or conspiracy is only an excuse to embezzle the nation's wealth and blame others for our disastrous situation. This government has misused our enormous oil revenues. There has been hardly any focus on building the infrastructure of our society over the past few years.  The government's inefficient spending policies have lead to wasted capital, an economic down turn, poverty and the reduction in the standard of living for our citizens. Today our nation is experiencing an unprecedented level of inflation and an extreme economic down turn."

Karroubi added: "Blaming our administrative and economic failures and the frustrations that have resulted from them on our people, the Green movement or foreign countries is only an excuse for not avoiding responsibilities. For 30 years the global arrogance was used as a means to justify our economic woes to our citizens.  Now, according to their new interpretation [the ruling government's] the so called "sedition and the leaders of the sedition" have been added to this ever growing list of arrogant perpetrators!"

Karroubi reiterated: "These gentlemen must realize that our economic challenges are intertwined with people's daily lives. Today even the slightest change in the price of goods has an enormous effect on the lives of our citizens. These gentlemen still insist that the sanctions have no effect on our daily lives. Why is it then that according to the head of Iran's Chamber of Commerce the sanctions have led to a 30% increase in the cost of imports?"

Karroubi continued: "This gentlemen uses the term "economic sedition" as a license for the massive repression of our people who are complaining about ever rising prices. They [the government] are fully aware of the economic disaster that awaits the nation and conveniently refers to it as an "economic sedition" in the making. A few months ago, I accidentally witnessed a women being robbed on the street. Her purse was snatched and I found my self subconsciously looking for security officers in charge of that particular street. I say to these gentlemen, rather than suppressing our citizens and spending your time preventing people from being robbed in plain day light, focus on their security. Rather than addressing the nation's economic challenges, perhaps you should take a step towards ensuring security for our society by focus on the widespread use of drugs in our country and those who distribute it. If any statements are to be made regarding our economic situation, they should be made by the Economic Minister and the Head of the Central Bank and through the presentation of facts and evidence. They are unfortunately seeking to once again create a military and policed atmosphere, because they know that pressure is increasing on their government and the people are more likely to once again protest.

In response to claims by a gentlemen that "if it were not for the presence of the Supreme Leader, the followers and supporters of the revolution would have derailed the revolution by now", Karroubi stated: "These type of statements are detrimental to the ruling government.  I believe these words were addressed mainly towards me and Mr. Hashemi. They seek to eliminate certain individuals from the revolution's history; this while these individuals have been present during ever phase of our revolution.  They think they can make the presence of these individuals fade, but they are mistaken."
]
Karroubi added: "I believe that we can come to two conclusions based on this gentleman's remarks. First, that similar to Talha and Zubair [two eminent companions of the Holy Prophet Mohammad who pledged allegiance to Imam Ali but ended up defecting]  the events that occurred after the revolution made it exceedingly more difficult for the supporters and followers of the revolution to continue on their path. Or second, that our country's fate has fallen in the hands of strangers and the unruly and the followers and supporters of the revolution stand against this derailing and diversion from the Islamic Republic.  Just like Abu Dharr al-Ghafari [close companion of Prophet Mohammad and one of four early followers of Imam Ali]. It is up to the people to judge which of these interpretations is true and correct.

Karroubi, the Head of Etemad Meli Party, also touched upon the subject of referendum, the future of the Green movement, the derailment of the regime, the economic future of our country, and remarks by certain authorities.
